Prison Island is located about 5–6 km northwest of Stone Town , the historic heart of Zanzibar Island .
A short 20–30 minute boat ride from Stone Town takes you to this beautiful tropical island surrounded by turquoise waters.
Interestingly, Prison Island was never actually used as a functioning prison.
In the late 19th century, the island was purchased by an Arab slave trader and later used by the British colonial authorities. Around 1893, a prison building was constructed, intended to hold rebellious slaves. However, it was eventually used as a quarantine station for people with yellow fever and other infectious diseases.
Today, the old prison building still stands and serves as a historical site and small museum that visitors can explore.
